The rich purple velvet of this chair provides a contemporary contrast to the period Edwardian features of this calming bedroom at a previous Richmond Bell Architects project in Barnes, southwest London, where the original plaster mouldings have been carefully restored as part of a complete home renovation.

Now we are finally at the end of January we thought we'd share this image of our Caribbean project, recently submitted for planning to the Antiguan authorities.

The villa is designed to make the most of the stunning views southwards across the sea. A series of expansive verandas, made from traditional local materials, lead to a terrace and infinity pool, allowing for that relaxed, outdoor Caribbean lifestyle.

Looking back into the archives at this traditional log burner fireplace at a previous @richmondbellarchitects house in Wiltshire. The project consisted of the creation of a versatile space that could be used as an art gallery or sitting room, so the size and style of the fireplace was carefully considered so that it didn’t dominate the room, but would still make it nice and cosy on a cold winter’s evening. Just the kind of thing we’re thinking about today!

@richmondbellarchitects were delighted to learn last week that Wiltshire Council had granted planning permission for this contemporary new home near Salisbury.

The house is a replacement dwelling on a farm site, and has been inverted so that the living area is on the first floor, to make the most of the views out across the surrounding fields and newly planted vineyard.

Richmond Bell designed the house using natural materials such as timber and local stone to help it blend into its surroundings, and to reflect the style of the original nearby barns.

The project involves significant landscape and ecological enhancements with the creation of a large wildflower meadow and natural pond in the field. New hedgerows will be planted across the site, while external lighting is minimised to prevent night glare – important for the local insect population. An adjoining garage will have a green roof to encourage biodiversity.

The house forms part of a larger eco holiday resort with four timber-clad holiday units also granted planning permission.

Members of the RBA team are heading off to the Chalke Valley History Festival next week, where we are pleased to be sponsoring the Plantagenet members’ tent again.

We are looking forward in particular to Isabella Tree’s talk on Rewilding, and Ben Goldsmith and Keggie Carew speaking on returning native species to our landscapes. Hopefully we will get some inspiration on how to encourage wildlife and nature into our gardens and landscapes.

The RBA team left @planted_community at Stourhead National Trust last weekend feeling inspired by the commitment and passion for sustainable design shown by all the exhibitors, producers and speakers. A great event – we’re already looking forward to next year!

This #tbt therefore feels particularly apt today – a natural swimming pool in Wiltshire, set in a wildflower garden that will encourage biodiversity, created by @fi.boylegardendesign. The pool sits next to a pool house that was designed with the environment as a key consideration – it was carefully positioned on the site to give maximum exposure to the solar panels on the rear roof, whilst using natural materials to help it blend into the surrounding AONB landscape. Given the weather at the moment, we’d quite like to be there now…

Three weeks to go until Planted Country at @ntstourhead, in partnership with the National Trust – three days of nature-based sustainable design, including a programme of talks from a variety of experts, alongside a botanical market showcasing brands and businesses who place nature and the environment at their core, nature-based workshops and woodland walks, and seasonal, locally sourced food.

@richmondbellarchitects undertook the renovation of this Grade II listed house near Stonehenge in 2019, obtaining Listed Building and Planning Consent from Wiltshire Council for the modernisation and improvement of the internal layout while still maintaining the character and some original features. We are now working on the master planning of the rest of the site, including designs for a new swimming pool and pool house.

The house is available for rent as a luxury holiday home, sleeping up to 24 people.

When designing your home, @richmondbellarchitects will always take into account environmental factors, such as here at one of our earliest projects in south-west London. The external timber louvers to the large corner window will provide shade from sun bouncing off the white walls and limestone flooring of the courtyard. The louvers, together with the Japanese acer tree, will also make interesting shade patterns inside the house, helping to bring the outdoors inside that little bit more.

Connecting with nature is a key principle of biophilic design, proven to improve mental health and wellbeing. On World Earth Day 2023, @richmondbellarchitects are pleased to share the concept design for this new home in a nature reserve in Wiltshire. Currently a disused barn, the re-purposing of this redundant building will enable the owners to live on site, making it easier to manage the re-wilding of the land and monitor its wildlife.

Sustainable design is one of our key principles at RBA. We recognise that we all have our part to play in solving climate change, and that the built environment has a significant effect on this. We look to integrate renewable energy strategies into our designs, together with sustainable building techniques and technology, to minimise the impact on the environment.

Now that we've seen some sun and it feels that spring is finally on the way, we're turning our minds to alfresco dining, such as here at our contemporary Studio project near Tisbury. The sharp asymmetrical angles of the pool house, the irregular rectangles of the retaining wall and the curved wooden gate all come together and overlook the patio seating area of the main house. The Studio has further contemporary detail in the varying widths of the timber cladding and the long narrow windows. Lots of progress at our off-grid new build near Shaftesbury! The scaffolding is all down, windows are in, floor tiles are laid and the walls are ready for painting. Work has now started on site at this @richmondbellarchitects project in Salisbury. The project consists of a contemporary extension and renovations to a traditional mill house and has been sensitively designed to respect the history and heritage of the building. Sustainability is key to the project, which includes a green roof to the extension and the installation of a water source heat pump to provide heat to the house and a studio outbuilding.

This lovely West London kitchen-dining room extension is flooded with light from the large steel-framed doors into the garden. Surrounded by London Stock Brick, the detailing on the doors reflects the feature lighting above the table, while the indoor plants help to bring nature even further into the house.

#throwbackthursday to the @richmondbellarchitects team’s first visit to the tranquil site of this barn in Wiltshire.

We have recently received planning permission to change the use of the barn into a two-bedroom dwelling that will retain the rural character of the original building. It will be converted using sustainable building techniques to keep the site as environmentally friendly as possible.

The new house is situated on a sensitive site in an AONB and forms part of a nature reserve where the clients are undertaking the rewilding of the surrounding land. The planning application therefore also included a carefully considered landscaping plan that allowed plenty of accommodation for wildlife, including bat lofts, owl boxes, insect hotels and bird boxes and even homes for dormice!

Work is progressing well at this off-grid five bedroom new house in Dorset.

The house is a blend of traditional and contemporary architecture with a pitched roof, limestone gables and timber cladding that reflect the local vernacular, while the windows and doors have a more modern feel.

The house will be completely off grid, with an array of solar panels in the field to the north that will supply the house with its energy and make it self-sufficient. The rest of the field will be carefully rewilded to increase the sustainability of the site, with new woodland, owl and bat boxes and a small pond providing new habitats for wildlife. The house has been built using sustainable building technologies that will provide it with high levels of insulation and low levels of heat loss.

We're dreaming of sunnier days when we can open the Crittal doors up on this @richmondbellarchitects kitchen in Barnes, south west London. The extension formed part of major renovations to the house, and created a large, open plan kitchen-dining room with balcony terrace above.

Three weeks to go until Planted Country at @ntstourhead, in partnership with the National Trust – three days of nature-based sustainable design, including a programme of talks from a variety of experts, alongside a botanical market showcasing brands and businesses who place nature and the environment at their core, nature-based workshops and woodland walks, and seasonal, locally sourced food.

@richmondbellarchitects undertook the renovation of this Grade II listed house near Stonehenge in 2019, obtaining Listed Building and Planning Consent from Wiltshire Council for the modernisation and improvement of the internal layout while still maintaining the character and some original features. We are now working on the master planning of the rest of the site, including designs for a new swimming pool and pool house.

The house is available for rent as a luxury holiday home, sleeping up to 24 people.

When designing your home, @richmondbellarchitects will always take into account environmental factors, such as here at one of our earliest projects in south-west London. The external timber louvers to the large corner window will provide shade from sun bouncing off the white walls and limestone flooring of the courtyard. The louvers, together with the Japanese acer tree, will also make interesting shade patterns inside the house, helping to bring the outdoors inside that little bit more.

Connecting with nature is a key principle of biophilic design, proven to improve mental health and wellbeing. On World Earth Day 2023, @richmondbellarchitects are pleased to share the concept design for this new home in a nature reserve in Wiltshire. Currently a disused barn, the re-purposing of this redundant building will enable the owners to live on site, making it easier to manage the re-wilding of the land and monitor its wildlife.

Sustainable design is one of our key principles at RBA. We recognise that we all have our part to play in solving climate change, and that the built environment has a significant effect on this. We look to integrate renewable energy strategies into our designs, together with sustainable building techniques and technology, to minimise the impact on the environment.

Now that we've seen some sun and it feels that spring is finally on the way, we're turning our minds to alfresco dining, such as here at our contemporary Studio project near Tisbury. The sharp asymmetrical angles of the pool house, the irregular rectangles of the retaining wall and the curved wooden gate all come together and overlook the patio seating area of the main house. The Studio has further contemporary detail in the varying widths of the timber cladding and the long narrow windows. Lots of progress at our off-grid new build near Shaftesbury! The scaffolding is all down, windows are in, floor tiles are laid and the walls are ready for painting. This room opens off the kitchen and will become a snug with views from the large, structural, corner window looking out over the fields.

Work has now started on site at this @richmondbellarchitects project in Salisbury. The project consists of a contemporary extension and renovations to a traditional mill house and has been sensitively designed to respect the history and heritage of the building. Sustainability is key to the project, which includes a green roof to the extension and the installation of a water source heat pump to provide heat to the house and a studio outbuilding.

This lovely West London kitchen-dining room extension is flooded with light from the large steel-framed doors into the garden. Surrounded by London Stock Brick, the detailing on the doors reflects the feature lighting above the table, while the indoor plants help to bring nature even further into the house.

#throwbackthursday to the @richmondbellarchitects team’s first visit to the tranquil site of this barn in Wiltshire.

We have recently received planning permission to change the use of the barn into a two-bedroom dwelling that will retain the rural character of the original building. It will be converted using sustainable building techniques to keep the site as environmentally friendly as possible.

The new house is situated on a sensitive site in an AONB and forms part of a nature reserve where the clients are undertaking the rewilding of the surrounding land. The planning application therefore also included a carefully considered landscaping plan that allowed plenty of accommodation for wildlife, including bat lofts, owl boxes, insect hotels and bird boxes and even homes for dormice!

Work is progressing well at this off-grid five bedroom new house in Dorset.

The house is a blend of traditional and contemporary architecture with a pitched roof, limestone gables and timber cladding that reflect the local vernacular, while the windows and doors have a more modern feel.

The house will be completely off grid, with an array of solar panels in the field to the north that will supply the house with its energy and make it self-sufficient. The rest of the field will be carefully rewilded to increase the sustainability of the site, with new woodland, owl and bat boxes and a small pond providing new habitats for wildlife. The house has been built using sustainable building technologies that will provide it with high levels of insulation and low levels of heat loss.

We're dreaming of sunnier days when we can open the Crittal doors up on this @richmondbellarchitects kitchen in Barnes, south west London. The extension formed part of major renovations to the house, and created a large, open plan kitchen-dining room with balcony terrace above.
